Jerusalem Bagels

Don't be fooled by the name, these aren't bagels at all...A Jerusalem bagel is a large oblong shaped bread originating in the middle east and is almost impossible to find in the U.S. They have a fragrant and crunchy crust, the result of being brushed with extra virgin olive oil and a middle eastern herb blend called Za'atar while still piping hot. If you walk the streets of the old city in Jerusalem, you will see peddlers on street corners selling these treats, along with a bit of Za'atar for dipping wrapped in yesterdays newspaper.

How are Jerusalem Bagels different?

While conventional bagels are steamed and have a very dense interior, Jerusalem bagels are baked in a stone oven and have a softer more fluffy interior. While conventional bagels contain sugar (almost all store bought breads do!) Jerusalem bagels have pure organic Medjoul date syrup in them called 'Silan' which I order especially from the north of Israel. My Jerusalem bagels are brushed with a mixture of extra virgin olive oil and Za'ater as soon as they are out of the oven giving them a taste like no bagel and finally, while conventional bagels are found everywhere...This special treat is almost impossible to find.

Please Note: Each order includes three. Jerusalem bagels should be eaten within hours of being baked, so if anything is left I highly recommend toasting it to bring back that 'Just baked' flavor.

Made from: Bread Flour, Pure Organic Date Syrup ('Silan'), Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Palestinian Za'atar, Salt, Yeast.

 Recommended pairings:

Fresh Authentic Hummus

The main ingredient in Hummus is garbanzo beans (chickpeas), raw tahini, lemon, garlic, and..magic. If you go to Israel and talk to anyone about hummus you will witness the amusingly intense arguments people have regarding who makes the best hummus in town. Real hummus tastes nothing like store bought hummus, so if that's the only thing you've had, you owe yourself a taste of this creamy, nourishing and flavorful experience. Ariel's hummus recipe is inspired by his favorite Israeli chef (whom you may know) Yotam Ottolenghi, and trust me, his is the best (;

Home Made Zhug

A very spicy Yemenite chili paste made with a ton of cilantro, hot green chili peppers, garlic, and the signature flavor coming from a Yemenite spice blend called Hawayij which I grind and blend myself. I love love Zhug and you can't get this stuff anywhere which is why I just had to start making it.

How to eat: Zhug is very spicy, very salty and is meant to be used in small portions as a seasoning, not to be eaten on it's own (I put a small dollop of it on my hummus). It'll last for weeks in the fridge, and is a friend of hummus but is also delicious in salads and sandwiches.

Add a jar of Zhug to your order here.

A delicious treat!!

Up until a year ago, I had never heard of Jerusalem Bagels. Then a wonderful neighbor and awesome baker turned me on to them. From that point on, I was hooked.. They are a delicious treat, with a unique and satisfying taste due the Za'ater. They are best served warm (in my opinion) and I will reheat them in a toaster oven once I get home. Even my wife, who can be a finicky eater, love them. Thank you Sagit for sharing such an awesome and delicious treat!!

A favorite

My dad spent years in Israel and always talked about Jerusalem bagels. I’d never had one. He passed suddenly in 2016, so discovering them through Hearty Breads has been a sweet way to remember him. They are SO delicious. Plus, Sagit is such a kind person and a joy to know!

I love them!

The Jerusalem Bagels were so good! I discovered popping them in the toaster oven for a couple of minutes made these out of this world! Delicately crispy outside and lovely inside. I am looking forward to them to coming back into rotation.
